Hot Potato (party log)
Who: Chloe Frazer & any and all party people!!
What: Harvest Celebrations/Halloween Party/Ruby’s Birthday/Rat Marriage/Big Communal Cooking Party so Chloe doesn't burn down her house
When: October 12
Where: At Chloe’s house on Greene Street
Content Warnings: Food descriptions, probably.
Other Notes: Feel free to make this a mingle and reply to other characters!
Chloe had wondered whether to go through with the harvest party once Lalo had disappeared, but as they say, the show must go on. There's still a lot worth celebrating, and people need something hopeful after the mess last month. Luckily her house had made it through everything all right.
The poster had said to wear a costume, so she's hoping to see a lot of those, and she’d recruited some people to help her put together the menu exactly to Lalo’s specifications, so unfortunately no one is safe from British Potatoes. There are even candles for the birthday cake.
Chloe herself is dressed as a sexy lumberjack, with one of Lalo’s old flannels tied in a knot under her breasts and denim cutoffs made from the jeans Kostya had gotten blood on (shh). She's got a fire roaring, because otherwise she’d freeze.

He's always had a hard time with it. Caring for others feels too vulnerable, especially when he already has a hard enough time taking care of himself most of the time. And yet it's a trap he has found himself falling into - not even just with his now-husband, but even with people in this place, as he has just confessed to Eren.
It still feels a little bad to have said it, but Eren's reaction to it makes it relatively easier to deal with than it would have been otherwise.
He sucks in a breath.
"If you're so certain," he says, still not sounding entirely convinced. But he also feels at this point that Eren is too stubborn to listen to anything other than what he has made up his own mind about, and this seems to be one of those things. As Billy releases the breath, he tries to think of something a little lighter to talk about. Like asking-- "Did you come to the party together with someone else?"
Eren did just look around like he was looking for someone, after all..

Eren barely registers that he looked away. Confusion passes over his face for a moment at the question.
"No," he answers. "I don't really go anywhere with anyone."
That can't be too surprising, since Eren tries his hardest to radiate loner vibes. Probably bringing a real skull to this party is helping that image.
"Are there people you knew from home here?" he asks, which might seem unrelated. In Eren's head that connection makes sense, at least.
no subject
So rather than remarking anything with surprise about that, Billy nods in response to Eren's question.
"Quite a lot. Cornelius and I already knew each other back home." Because Billy certainly would never want to shotgun marry with someone he only just met in this place. That's so cringe to him on a personal level. Way too cringe!! "But there are many men here who were on the same expedition as the two of us."
Billy pauses, then he shakes his head. "They don't particularly care for me though, so it hardly even matters that we come from the same place."
no subject
He's surprised to hear they don't like Billy. Billy seems like the kind of person who tries to get along with people. Even before Eren was the way he is now, even as a kid, he never bothered with that. He doesn't have time to worry about shit like that.
He's never caught on to his own accidental charisma. It isn't always a thing, but he's given enough impassioned outbursts over the years. None of it was ever once to try to get anyone to like him, though.
Eren likes Billy well enough, despite himself.
So he can't help but ask, "What do they have against you?"
no subject
There are a whole lot of answers to that questions, and all of them feel kind of awkward to give Eren. Not because Billy has absolutely no trust in the other, but more because they all just are objectively awkward without context, and even the context itself is.. a lot. Sticking it to the homosexuality feels the safest, considering it doesn't seem to bother Eren, but that applies more to one of the others from his world rather than the group as a whole. And misrepresenting the situation could be bad, in case Eren ever gets in touch with said others.
So he slowly exhales, deciding to go for the less safe answer - hoping that it won't screw up the slight bond they have gained so far.
"We were all on an expedition back home. One to the far north-- a very inhospitable place." It's not something he would usually have to explain, but Eren does seem to come from a very different world than his own.. Who knows if they even have a North Pole! "But the people in charge, the commanders and lieutenants, many of whom are in this place.. They were terribly incompetent. They were getting more and more people killed with their decisions, and I-- I too was dying because of it."
He talks a little slower as he says that. There's something about him that seems.. timid, or sad. Maybe it's just difficult to recall all of this, even though it's such a long time ago now.
"So I suggested to Cornelius that we should start a mutiny, so we could save ourselves and the men who wanted to join us. Obviously those in charge are not very fond of the fact we did that."
no subject
"I remember you told me there was a bear monster," he says. And something about it being cold, like this place.
He can't really judge mutiny. He's indirectly responsible for the death of most of the people running their military and their government, though he hadn't exactly intended for all of them to die. He's directly responsible for a lot worse, though he's not about to spill that to anyone who doesn't already know — and that list is exactly one person in this world.
"Did it work?" is all he asks.
no subject
"It was too late. Most of us were either too sick or too starved to have the strength to still make the trek." Sometimes that's what he regrets - that he didn't have the idea earlier. But sneaking off the ships would have been much more difficult than sneaking away once they actually were on land, as they had.. Still, maybe it would have given him more of a chance.
He exhales a breath that's almost deep enough to be a sigh.
"I was one of the people who was too sick. My body stopped working. No matter how badly I wanted to walk on, I just couldn't anymore." It's a little bit of a personal confession, but.. well, even if Eren is a little weird, Billy does trust him with this much. Especially when the other doesn't seem to be judging him for the mutiny of it all either.
we can wrap up anytime I think
Too little, too late. Eren knows what that can feel like, the despair that sets in. He's made enough shitty decisions that ended worse than he expected.
Probably at some point, the Rumbling went worse than he expected. He's still not even sure what he expects at the very end of it. Death, at the hands of someone who loves him — someone who he loves in whatever way he is still able, but not the way she deserves.
He hopes it does not end with being forgotten. He is so scared of being forgotten. That's one of the only things left that really scares him anymore.
He also knows what it is to betray people. He has betrayed people he loves, ostensibly in order to save them. Not that he's about to tell Billy any of that. He trusts Billy more than he trusts most people here, but that isn't saying much. Anyway, Eren's truths are too terrible, much worse than a mutiny.
Maybe someday he'll say something about any of it.
"Were you sick when you came here?" he asks. Most people he's met when they arrive have been shaken up but pretty much fine. This seems like a terrible place to be if you're sick — not much better than the place Billy talked about.
At least there are no bears (haha, or so they think).
yes!! you're free to give a wrap up tag to this, then we should be fine, i think c:
He pauses in the middle of that statement because it's still weird to him. This is one of those things that's simply not supposed to happen. Especially when there were actual doctors around back home, and they couldn't do a thing to him. Yet a trip to a mysterious place apparently did the deal..
Then again, maybe it was the whole resurrection that did it. But he's not too keen to talk with people who don't know about the whole deal from back home that it was actually a stabbing that killed him, rather than his disease.
Billy's expression shifts a little. He's not outright smiling, since that's so rare for him, but something in his eyes does seem a little lighter, mood-wise, as he says: "I suppose that means not absolutely everything about this place is terrible."
fin!
"This place is better than where I came from," Eren says, though as always he leaves out how much of that is now his doing. "It pisses me off, but it's not all bad."
He wanders off to try some cake or something. He realises that he does think of Billy as a friend, or at least closer to one than most anyone else he's met here. He meant it when he said it wasn't all bad.
