Like fuck Hickey's giving up, though. He moves back towards Jopson, hands this time going to the man's throat.

A moment of caught silence before a third body joins the fray: shaggy, furred, and snarling. Diefenbaker lunges for the man on top, fangs sinking into his clothing, his growl rising and rising as Fraser pushes in, reaching for the man on his back. Both of them are bloodied, snarling at each other as viciously as the wolf now amidst them. "Diefenbaker!"
The order snapped out, the wolf lets go of the first man and positions himself between them, braced, fangs showing, as Fraser hauls the second man, dark-haired, his eyes alight with rage, blood streaming from his nose, back. "What's going on here? What happened?"

He heaves out a breath, tasting copper in his mouth, the set of his shoulders betraying his thoughts.
If not restrained, he'll go after Hickey again in a moment's notice.
no subject
... Shit, that's Cornelius.
He recognises Fraser and his wolf trying to break it up, the other man — blood pouring from his nose — ready to go in for another round.
"Oi—!" Kieren looks terrified, but despite himself he hurries in. He moves half in front of Hickey, one hand at his friend's shoulder — his other held up to the other man: stop.
"Hey, back off. Leave him be."

He still really wants to punch Jopson, though. And if the man gives him the opportunity, he's going for round two.
"Don't ask me," Hickey says, still glaring daggers at Jopson, still daring the man to try something, just so he can have an excuse. "He's the one who started this mess. Unprovoked, I might add."

Fraser looks to Jopson, taking in the tension running through the man's shoulders, the pure hatred in his eyes. He keeps his own voice steady and calm. "Did something happen?"
no subject
"Tell them what you said to the girl, Mr. Hickey. Tell them how you grabbed her and forced her to listen to your tales of woe. Tell them what you said, deliberately, to frighten her. You wish the truth to be out, so let it out."
no subject
The hell's going on here?
Still, Kieren's face screws up and he shakes his head. "Listen. You can't just go around battering people." Christ, it feels like the HVF all over again, in some way, and that's horrifying to him as a concept.
"You do not take the law into your own hands, alright?"
no subject
"She was the one who brought it up in the first place," Hickey points out, not moving from where he is near Kieren. If Jopson wants to start the fight back up again, Hickey's making sure he's got someone by his side who can help him out. "I was minding my own business when Kate decided to accuse me of something she knew nothing about, something that happened back home and, quite frankly, was none of her business."
He gives Jopson a little scowl before turning his attention to Fraser. "I defended myself against her slander and grabbed Kate's wrist. Yeah, I'll admit to that. But that doesn't justify getting my bloody face beat in, does it?" Back him up here!
Noticeably, nowhere in that little speech does Hickey actually do what Jopson is challenging him to do.

Mostly. Until now.
He's a policeman who lacks jurisdiction; all he can do is try to soothe ruffled feathers, try to get to the bottom of the issue, and hopefully keep anyone from getting seriously hurt. Fraser listens to the smaller man's words, trying to piece it all together. "If you're going to complain about an accusation, I might avoid making one of your own, Mister Hickey. 'Slander' is nothing to sneeze at, when we all have to be able to rely on each other's word."
Though his voice is mild there's nothing movable beneath it. Not only is it a major accusation to make, it's inflammatory, making the smaller man look even more of a victim, potentially by design. He looks back at the still fuming Jopson.
"And how did you get involved, Mister Jopson? Did you see what happened?"
no subject
So he talks only to Hickey, ignoring the two other men.
"But you made it her business, Mr. Hickey," he sneers. "You made it her business the moment you told her of your crimes. If you are so bold as to tell that to her, then tell it to everyone. Tell them what you did."
no subject
"He doesn't have to say anything." he looks back to Hickey, fixing him with a pointed look. "Don't even bother."
Enough. Not a fucking word. Do not keep digging. The last thing this needs is to get even worse.

As he looks around at the people there, Hickey's eyes spot Goodsir. And well. He is damn certain who's the one who told Kate everything, who told her information that only a handful of people here knew. He gives Goodsir a look of pure loathing before turning his attention back to the conversation at hand.
"I did the same thing I've been doing every day since I arrived in this bloody town! I've been trying to keep people alive. Survival's nasty work but it's better than the alternative. What would you rather I have done? Wasted away, waiting desperately for a captain that wasn't there?"
He knows he's going to get punched again but it's worth it just to get that little dagger in. How's dying without Crozier feel, huh Jopson? Sure sucks, huh Jopson?
no subject
Hickey stabs a glare across the room and Fraser turns his head to see Goodsir standing there, looking horrified. This is all tangled up in everything that came before, in something that no one's saying aloud, and he can't see any clear way of untangling it at the present moment. Definitely not when the two men are stabbing barbed words at each other like this. "You know, Mister Hickey, I don't think continuing to stoke this argument is going to help matters. In fact, I would suggest you both take a breath, and step away. Mister Jopson, I recommend getting that nose looked at."
no subject
The barb from him doesn't sting as it used to. It was Hickey who forced Crozier to stay. It was Hickey who hurt him and took him. His nose can wait and he tries to step forward, though is not nearly strong enough to pull away from Fraser.
"But he was there, Mr. Hickey. Because you forced him into your camp after you attacked the others. He was there, listening to your speeches and your pretty words while you committed the most vile - " He pauses, glancing to Goodsir and he immediately stops talking, raising his head but refusing to say any more.
no subject
"Cornelius." he hisses it through his teeth, his jaw set. Mate, he's going to smack you one. Maybe lob another jar at you.
He doesn't quite understand entirely what's going on, but he knows enough that shit was bad in Hickey's world — but Kieren can't be sure to trust much else of what's being said against him. But the other man tries to step forward and Kieren's moving again, reaffirming his stance, a hand raised.
"Alright, we're— we're not doing this." he's trying to keep his voice even, but there's a tremor in it. He's very stressed out. "This place is doing a good enough job of trying kill us without us helping it along, yeah?"
no subject
"Keep Jopson away from me and we'll have a pleasant fucking rest of our day."
no subject
Ah. Kate's here. And though Fraser's grateful to see Lieutenant Little keeping between her and harm, that might complicate matters. He turns back to Jopson, pitching his voice lower. "I don't think Kieran and I are the only ones here who would prefer this didn't turn back into a fight, Mister Jopson. If you'll come with me, I'll get you some ice for your nose."
no subject
And if Hickey decides to, well, he can guess how it might go.
He nods to the suggestion and brings his hand up, wiping the blood away again. He says nothing, but he'll follow.
