Hickey lets out a triumphant little "hah!" as he hears that crack. It then turns into a grunt of pain as Jopson hits his side. Hickey scrambles back slightly, giving Jopson a fresh new look at that black eye that is starting to spread across his face (the rest of the bruises are still hidden.)

Like fuck Hickey's giving up, though. He moves back towards Jopson, hands this time going to the man's throat.

It's unlikely anyone might notice the door to the hall opening, amid the commotion; nor are they likely to pay much attention to the man ducking through, removing his hat as he enters. A fight like this, where both participants are lost in a red haze of fury, will keep going until they're dragged or shocked out of it. A bucket of cold water might do the trick, or a gun fired in the air, or – potentially – this:

A moment of caught silence before a third body joins the fray: shaggy, furred, and snarling. Diefenbaker lunges for the man on top, fangs sinking into his clothing, his growl rising and rising as Fraser pushes in, reaching for the man on his back. Both of them are bloodied, snarling at each other as viciously as the wolf now amidst them. "Diefenbaker!"

The order snapped out, the wolf lets go of the first man and positions himself between them, braced, fangs showing, as Fraser hauls the second man, dark-haired, his eyes alight with rage, blood streaming from his nose, back. "What's going on here? What happened?"

Thomas tries to shrug off the hand from his person, but doesn't lash out at him. He's that much in control. Enough, even, that he reaches up to wipe the blood from his nose. The questions are met with silence at first as Thomas keeps his eyes on Hickey.

He heaves out a breath, tasting copper in his mouth, the set of his shoulders betraying his thoughts.

If not restrained, he'll go after Hickey again in a moment's notice.

There'd been a commotion as he'd walked towards the Community Hall, his arms full of firewood. People were gathering, some rushing in, chattering amongst themselves and Kieren had stared, frowning — slowing to a stop for a moment. Dropping the firewood on the Hall's small porch, he'd silently slipped in between the gathering crowds to see what was going on, hurrying a little at the sound of a fight.

... Shit, that's Cornelius.

He recognises Fraser and his wolf trying to break it up, the other man — blood pouring from his nose — ready to go in for another round.

"Oi—!" Kieren looks terrified, but despite himself he hurries in. He moves half in front of Hickey, one hand at his friend's shoulder — his other held up to the other man: stop.

"Hey, back off. Leave him be."

Hickey, with his visibly black eye and shifted breathing that indicates he's a lot more bruised and lot more wounded under his clothes than he wishes to admit, is also ready to go after Jopson again in a moment's notice. But it's only when he feels a hand on his shoulder and notices that it's Kieren that Hickey stops.

He still really wants to punch Jopson, though. And if the man gives him the opportunity, he's going for round two.

"Don't ask me," Hickey says, still glaring daggers at Jopson, still daring the man to try something, just so he can have an excuse. "He's the one who started this mess. Unprovoked, I might add."

The man he's holding back shakes off his hand and wipes the blood off his face, and Fraser recognizes him: Thomas Jopson, the man he'd met the other day and another sailor from the Terror. He can't worry about that too much just now; he puts himself between Jopson and the other man, one hand spread in front of Jopson's chest to keep him back, the other held out toward the smaller man Kieran is defending. Between each set of men, Diefenbaker still stands, braced, teeth showing. "All right."

Fraser looks to Jopson, taking in the tension running through the man's shoulders, the pure hatred in his eyes. He keeps his own voice steady and calm. "Did something happen?"

Thomas raises his head, looking from the hand to his face and then past him, over his shoulder to Hickey. He reaches up, touching his tender nose, wincing at his own bruises and aches. He is in no condition to endure a fight like he wanted, but there was only so much he could take.

"Tell them what you said to the girl, Mr. Hickey. Tell them how you grabbed her and forced her to listen to your tales of woe. Tell them what you said, deliberately, to frighten her. You wish the truth to be out, so let it out."

Kieren's expression shifts to disapproval, the words aren't there but it's clear in his eyes: What the fuck, man? Attacking someone, unprovoked? It dips, briefly at the mention of a girl and Kieren glances back to Hickey with raised eyebrows.

The hell's going on here?

Still, Kieren's face screws up and he shakes his head. "Listen. You can't just go around battering people." Christ, it feels like the HVF all over again, in some way, and that's horrifying to him as a concept.

"You do not take the law into your own hands, alright?"

Hickey takes a moment to assess the situation. Because there are other people here. What he says next matters.

"She was the one who brought it up in the first place," Hickey points out, not moving from where he is near Kieren. If Jopson wants to start the fight back up again, Hickey's making sure he's got someone by his side who can help him out. "I was minding my own business when Kate decided to accuse me of something she knew nothing about, something that happened back home and, quite frankly, was none of her business."

He gives Jopson a little scowl before turning his attention to Fraser. "I defended myself against her slander and grabbed Kate's wrist. Yeah, I'll admit to that. But that doesn't justify getting my bloody face beat in, does it?" Back him up here!

Noticeably, nowhere in that little speech does Hickey actually do what Jopson is challenging him to do.

You do not take the law into your own hands. With one stroke, the young man hits at a thing that's been worrying him since he arrived: without any idea of what, if any, jurisdiction they might be under, it's impossible to know what law to uphold or if someone could be considered to be breaking one. In many ways, they've all been taking the law into their own hands. Until now, this small community has largely been operating under the premises of an understood, if mostly unspoken, social contract, one that has mostly kept disagreements from escalating into physical violence.

Mostly. Until now.

He's a policeman who lacks jurisdiction; all he can do is try to soothe ruffled feathers, try to get to the bottom of the issue, and hopefully keep anyone from getting seriously hurt. Fraser listens to the smaller man's words, trying to piece it all together. "If you're going to complain about an accusation, I might avoid making one of your own, Mister Hickey. 'Slander' is nothing to sneeze at, when we all have to be able to rely on each other's word."

Though his voice is mild there's nothing movable beneath it. Not only is it a major accusation to make, it's inflammatory, making the smaller man look even more of a victim, potentially by design. He looks back at the still fuming Jopson.

"And how did you get involved, Mister Jopson? Did you see what happened?"

This is not a community issue. This has nothing to do with the law, with the others. This is a deep seated, deep rooted issue between Thomas Jopson and the man with no name.

So he talks only to Hickey, ignoring the two other men.

"But you made it her business, Mr. Hickey," he sneers. "You made it her business the moment you told her of your crimes. If you are so bold as to tell that to her, then tell it to everyone. Tell them what you did."

Kieren's eyes close briefly in disbelief, and he realises. That blonde Jesus girl, the one with the bun. He grabbed her wrist. And he's admitting it. Oh, for Christ's sake, Cornelius. Definitely not the brightest idea, considering that one.

"He doesn't have to say anything." he looks back to Hickey, fixing him with a pointed look. "Don't even bother."

Enough. Not a fucking word. Do not keep digging. The last thing this needs is to get even worse.

[personal profile] friendsfordinner 2024-02-21 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but here's the problem. If Hickey doesn't say anything, Jopson will. And Hickey knows Jopson is more than happy to drag his name through the mud and make it worse for him. There's no staying quiet. It's either he explains what happened and tries to keep things on his terms as much as possible or Jopson explains what happened.

As he looks around at the people there, Hickey's eyes spot Goodsir. And well. He is damn certain who's the one who told Kate everything, who told her information that only a handful of people here knew. He gives Goodsir a look of pure loathing before turning his attention back to the conversation at hand.

"I did the same thing I've been doing every day since I arrived in this bloody town! I've been trying to keep people alive. Survival's nasty work but it's better than the alternative. What would you rather I have done? Wasted away, waiting desperately for a captain that wasn't there?"

He knows he's going to get punched again but it's worth it just to get that little dagger in. How's dying without Crozier feel, huh Jopson? Sure sucks, huh Jopson?

He can see, in his mind's eye, how Ray would approach this situation: with bluster, probably shaking both men down to determine the instigator. He's not sure if Ray's methods would work better here or not, but all he's got to rely on are his own instincts.

Hickey stabs a glare across the room and Fraser turns his head to see Goodsir standing there, looking horrified. This is all tangled up in everything that came before, in something that no one's saying aloud, and he can't see any clear way of untangling it at the present moment. Definitely not when the two men are stabbing barbed words at each other like this. "You know, Mister Hickey, I don't think continuing to stoke this argument is going to help matters. In fact, I would suggest you both take a breath, and step away. Mister Jopson, I recommend getting that nose looked at."

Thomas almost smiles as Hickey continues to dig his grave. Almost. He takes such satisfaction in letting him talk himself into circles.

The barb from him doesn't sting as it used to. It was Hickey who forced Crozier to stay. It was Hickey who hurt him and took him. His nose can wait and he tries to step forward, though is not nearly strong enough to pull away from Fraser.

"But he was there, Mr. Hickey. Because you forced him into your camp after you attacked the others. He was there, listening to your speeches and your pretty words while you committed the most vile - " He pauses, glancing to Goodsir and he immediately stops talking, raising his head but refusing to say any more.

Oh, give him fucking strength. For as smart as his mate is, Hickey falls short of himself and decides to run his bloody mouth — Kieren's going to end up with stomach ulcers at this rate, and his insides are dead.

"Cornelius." he hisses it through his teeth, his jaw set. Mate, he's going to smack you one. Maybe lob another jar at you.

He doesn't quite understand entirely what's going on, but he knows enough that shit was bad in Hickey's world — but Kieren can't be sure to trust much else of what's being said against him. But the other man tries to step forward and Kieren's moving again, reaffirming his stance, a hand raised.

"Alright, we're— we're not doing this." he's trying to keep his voice even, but there's a tremor in it. He's very stressed out. "This place is doing a good enough job of trying kill us without us helping it along, yeah?"

"I didn't start this," Hickey points out, a little catty tone in his voice. But fine. He knows this isn't over. Fuck, Jopson will probably immediately go to try and punch him when everyone leaves. But right now, everything's come to a bit of a standstill. And, more importantly, Hickey doesn't want another black eye.

"Keep Jopson away from me and we'll have a pleasant fucking rest of our day."

"Thank you, Kieran." But these men aren't the only ones speaking; Fraser half-turns his head, glancing toward the entrance where another familiar voice had risen.

Ah. Kate's here. And though Fraser's grateful to see Lieutenant Little keeping between her and harm, that might complicate matters. He turns back to Jopson, pitching his voice lower. "I don't think Kieran and I are the only ones here who would prefer this didn't turn back into a fight, Mister Jopson. If you'll come with me, I'll get you some ice for your nose."

Thomas doesn't bother going after Hickey again. He's made his point and he can see the bruise on his face. It's up to the rest of them to see him for who he is; he won't bring harm or shame to Goodsir by saying it himself.

And if Hickey decides to, well, he can guess how it might go.

He nods to the suggestion and brings his hand up, wiping the blood away again. He says nothing, but he'll follow.
