But of course Crozier would find out; this town is small, and the event had gotten out of control; everyone's buzzing about it. When he sees the older man approaching, Little's already wincing, already ashamed, head dipping forwards as he hears him speak.
"I am sorry, sir. But I fear there can be no peace. I...I fear he will target Mr. Jopson and Miss Marsh, now. The way he has targeted others in the past."

He shakes his head softly. "He'll poison others by speaking, as he always does. He gains strength in our silence."
no subject
"Our silence.... Then, do you think we should have voiced more about him outright, before now? Warned the people here? I have been... wary to. Wary I might earn his wrath. I have tried to be very cautious with him."
His method for dealing with The Hickey Situation had been to play it safe, keep the devil placated, but clearly that could only last for a short time. In the end, none of it really helped at all. It's only made the wounds fester longer, and bleed heavier when things finally erupted.

"I don't want to start a war. I also don't want Hickey to use whatever good-will he's earned thus far to push and needle and break us. I fear..."
Ha. He fears. Goddamn it all to Hell.
"In any case, we need to find a way to keep the peace while at the same time prevent Hickey's scheming for a second time."

(That, and the way the other man had approached him, looked at him.... For a moment, it could almost seem that they were back where they were before here, when Francis Crozier was his captain, and Edward Little was looking to him for direction.)
It emboldens him a little, perhaps. Something to his stance shifts, however subtly. He nods, eyes meeting the older man's now and not letting go.
"I agree wholeheartedly, sir." A pause as he considers, frowning in thought. "But I must admit, I haven't the faintest how to manage both things. He listens to no one, respects no one. How can we hope to keep him controlled?"
no subject
"His influence comes from his ability to make others listen," he says, thinking out loud. "I think survival is his main aim, at least for the moment. When it shifts it will be obvious." Murder and mutiny levels of obvious.
"He wants to be known as someone capable, someone reliable and knowledgeable. He'll gather friends and allies, and when there's desperation he'll strike. When that time comes we'll need to do all we can to keep factions from forming. Our message is simple -- we work as one, all of us. It's our best chance at survival."
no subject
And the horror is the thought that things will repeat. Killings and mutiny; he nods, understanding exactly what Crozier means by a "shift." It's what he's been terrified of for months now.
"You are right. We cannot stop him from forming allies, but.... we can try to keep the people here as a community. So that if he does attempt to cause divide.... hopefully they will have formed a strong enough fortification as a community not to listen. Not to fall prey to him."
Ideally, that's what would have happened back out on the ice. Sometimes he still can't understand how it went wrong, how those men turned against one another. How it ended the way it did. But..... this is a second chance. And now they know what to look out for. They know what Hickey is. It's a good plan, it's.... something to try for. It's a spark of hope rekindled in him.
"I do still fear that he might turn his wrath to those involved. Miss Marsh... She has been staying under my roof, for extra protection. I feel we must keep an eye on her. The people here... they have been swallowed up into our upsets. They do not deserve to suffer for them."
no subject
"Mn." He nods, agreeing with the assessment. "Dragged into our mess like fish caught in a net."
Crozier furrows his brow and places his only remaining hand on his hip, an old habit from when he would pace in thought on the top deck. "They don't deserve this, but we'll make amends. We'll be reluctant to gossip or sow discord. The three of you -- you, Goodsir, Jopson, your goodwill has earned you the respect of the people, and it will continue to do so. We'll continue to give, not to just take. That will be enough."
cw: mention of child death
...He's spent more than one night unable to sleep, remembering how not even a small child was spared from Hickey's blade. If someone is in his way, or could be used for part of a greater scheme, he'll not hesitate. There would be no mercy spared. And the thought of Kate suffering at the hands of that demon..... He cannot bear it. He cannot. His brow furrows, tight, fretful by all of this, but it only emboldens him to stay more resilient.
"If I may speak candidly.... the people here respect you as well, sir. Even if many of them may not know you as well, you are a sturdy presence. Someone who clearly has experience in the world. The three of us are stronger with you alongside us."

He inclines his head gently. It isn't just idle flattery for the sake of it. His loyalty to his captain had been tested, twisted and warped by the things he put him and the others through, and yet he still looks to him to lead. It does mean something after all.
"Whatever misgivings I may have had before, I recognize the need for order and leadership." His life is not really his own anymore, his choices aren't the ones that matter. "None of us are in a place capable of handling mass deaths again, Edward. Not you, not I, not Harry or Thomas...if we stand together I'm almost certain our chances of survival will increase."
no subject
"It almost sounds as though you might take up the mantle of captain again, sir."
no subject
One day he'll get a real smile out of Edward, like the surprised delight in his smile at Jopson's promotion.
"I'm not certain what a captain might look like here," he adds, nodding slightly, "but I have a part to play. I see that now."
no subject
"The burden of.... being the sole leader... it is not something to be placed upon your shoulders." He sees that now; in fact, it would probably be impossible. This is not their ship. "But I do believe that this town has a need for leaders." Multiple. As Crozier said, people banding together, working together. "I have seen others stepping forth to try and help, as well. Strong people with good intentions, who wish to protect others. Constable Fraser, Mr. Wolf, Miss Earp..."
He doesn't know if Crozier is familiar with those names, but he thinks it would be nice if they could all meet. Join forces.
"And I will assist you however you need me to, sir. There is no question of it. I stand behind you."
no subject
What a blessing it is to see Little hold himself up higher. He's still burdened, there's no ridding him of that pressure on his shoulders entirely, but there was something to happy in his eyes.
He knows the people mentioned well enough. Some loud, some gruff, but all with stable thinking and the ability to care for other people.
"Stand beside me instead," he corrects him. "You said so yourself, there's a need for leaders, and you've certainly earned your place."
