Mostly because I was crazy. Got the paperwork to prove it.

[ The words are casual enough, but her glance drops to the table as she fiddles with her cup. ]

You know what's really fun, is being committed at age fourteen.

[ She can just about hear Waverly now. Are you gonna be this fun all day? ]

And the 'bitch' part is pretty self-explanatory, I think. But in my defense, I think it's a completely reasonable reaction to being hated by an entire town.

[ She flicks her glance back up to Jopson. She's smiling, but this one doesn't touch her eyes. ]

So, what do you think? That sound like Edward Little's type? Because I'm betting it's not.

[Thomas doesn't know what a lot of those words mean in the context that she's using them. But he does know the sort of people who go to asylums, and she's not that sort. He does know - a lot more about her.]

Edward - made a choice once. A choice that haunts him still. He is not a perfect man. And, in fact, there was a time when I hated him for it. Nearly as much as I hated Mr. Hickey.

But. Your worth as a person is not based on what he thinks of you. You are - from what I have seen - remarkable. Still, I think you are the sort of woman he can appreciate.

[ We're all guilty of something, Earp. That's what Dolls had told her, and she knows it's true. Almost everyone's done something that keeps them up at night. Some are just worse than others.

And she doesn't know much about what happened out there on the ice, aside from a few things Little's told her – the Carnivale, some vague mentions of Hickeys crimes – but she's sure it was more than the men slowly dying of illness and exposure.

Maybe one day she'll ask. But not today. ]

Honestly, I'd feel better if he didn't appreciate me. Is that weird?

He keeps saying nice things and it's throwing me off.

[ It's only going to make things worse when she inevitably disappoints his good opinion of her. ]

March is way easier to get.
lieutenantsteward: (this is my "hickey is an idiot" face)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-10 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[He laughs gently. Not unkindly, but soft.]

That's because you believe yourself incapable of being that person he sees you as.

Yeah, well, I've had twenty seven years to get to know who I am. He's had four months. Trust me, I don't improve on longer acquaintance.

[ She stretches over the table to get the flask, takes a swallow, and sets it down again. ]

I'm glad you guys have each other for company, though. Even with all the shit that happened before.
lieutenantsteward: (vain thing)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-10 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't good to be alone.

[He takes the flask, takes a drink, and coughs again.]

Not here. Not anywhere.
pacificator: (they said love is grabbing blindly)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-10 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[ One corner of her mouth quirks as he coughs. She doesn't reach for the flask, though she thinks about it. ]

I was alone for a really long time, before this. Aside from a few months at home, and even then...

[ She shrugs, glances down at her hands before looking back at him. ]

I've never been great at friends. So... this is nice.
lieutenantsteward: (that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-11 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear it. It isn't easy. Not for me, either. I don't - have friends. I have people I care for, but not friends.

I think you were my first real friend, Miss Earp.
pacificator: (what did I do to deserve you?)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her mouth twitches again, this time pleased and a little shy. Wynonna reaches for a cherry and sets it between her teeth, pulls the stem free in order to flick it at him. ]

Then quit it with the 'Miss.' You're my friend, and I'm definitely no lady.
lieutenantsteward: (just casual with my gun)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It is a difficult habit to break! [But he's grinning.]

And you are a lady. One in trousers, but one all the same.
pacificator: (hoi_63)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-11 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Bring me in on the next fight you get into and you'll see just how unladylike I can be.

[ But she's grinning, too. It's not like trading barbs with March, or hanging out with Ruby or Kate. This is easy in a different way. Because they're friends. She feels something in her reach out for that knowledge, cling to it with fierce, stubborn claws. ]

You think a lady would have brought you a flask of homemade hooch?
lieutenantsteward: (weeeeeeeeelllllllllll)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-11 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know the ladies where I live.

[He taps the flask.]

This is the first bit of spirits I've had in a very long time. I can already feel the world tilting.
pacificator: (1918)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-11 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like I'd like them.

[ At least, it sounds like they'd be more her style than the vague expectation of stuffy high class ladies that make up her mental image of women in his time.

Wynonna snorts, but not unkindly. ]

I told you it's strong. Careful with that shit, you don't know whose floor you might end up on.
lieutenantsteward: (Default)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-11 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No one will come here but you or Edward. And this is my floor.

[He feels safe enough that way.]
pacificator: (hoi_86)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-11 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And that is an excellent reminder of why I should go before he decides to show up here.

[ Even with Kate in tow. Things have been kind of back to normal with Little since he showed up asking for backup, but. ]

I already had one night of drinking with him and we both said way too much. No second rounds are needed.
lieutenantsteward: (not really well maybe)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-11 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thomas leans in.]

What did you say?
pacificator: (there are no vultures)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She shakes her head, slow, sucking at her teeth before she clicks her tongue, reluctant. ]

I told him I... give a damn about him.

[ Which doesn't sound like much. And maybe it's little enough, but she had still felt dangerously vulnerable saying it. ]

And that I'd trust him with Peacemaker.

[ A beat, as she relents and rolls her eyes at herself. ]

That he's the only one here I'd trust with Peacemaker.

lieutenantsteward: (worried)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-12 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's a bit of her story that he doesn't understand and it doesn't really register as he tilts his head.]

Peacemaker?
pacificator: by backstreets @ IJ (is it safe to rest my head again)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-12 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She shifts, hand dropping to her hip to curl her fingers around Peacemaker's smooth ivory grip before she draws the gun from its holster and lifts it so he can see, holding it sidelong in her fingers. She'd polished the old Buntline Special within an inch of its life and it gleams now in the low light of his cabin. ]

Peacemaker.

[ Wynonna turns it almost lazily in her hands, then sets it on the table top. ]

It belonged to my great-great grand-daddy. And to my daddy. And it was supposed to go to Willa, but...

It's a long story. But this gun is important. It's the only important thing I have here.
lieutenantsteward: (I will shoot you)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
[His eyebrows raise a moment.]

Oh. It's beautiful.

[He doesn't dare touch it.]

You must trust him.
pacificator: (so forgive me father if I have sinned)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[ She picks the revolver back up and re-holsters it. ]

He's had my back. A bunch of times. I had to leave Peacemaker behind once and I didn't even think about it, I just handed it to him.
lieutenantsteward: (vain thing)

[personal profile] lieutenantsteward 2024-03-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm -

[He tucks his hair behind his ear.]

I'm glad that he has you. He needs someone strong with him.
pacificator: (before it bends)

[personal profile] pacificator 2024-03-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ She presses her lips together and slouches back against the chair. ]

You don't know how weird it is to hear someone say that. Well, we'll see. Either way, I'm glad I've got you, too.

Even if you make me talk about boys.

[ her mouth is quirking into a half-grin as she adds: ] Next time I'll bring Kate and you can hear all about how great the Mountie is.
