And she'd just gotten so angry at Mr Hickey. How he paraded around acting charitable, helping the people here — and she knew it was all just a lie. Nothing but playing nice, ulterior motives. As if it could hide the monstrous things he'd done. And she'd just gotten so angry.
"Mr Hickey told me what you he made you do." Forced him to butcher people, as if they weren't even people any more. "Is that why you chose what you did? Because he made you do those things?"

"I gave into despair," he admits, "and the matters in which he forced my hand—they were no small part of what drove me there. I resisted—I tried to. But he would have tortured another man had I continued to refuse, and I could not allow that."
He wonders if Kate knows who he'd been forced to butcher, and how unspeakably complicated that made current matters.
